Lithographic printing: A process based on the principle of the natural aversion of water to grease. The areas to be printed receive and transfer ink to the paper; the non-printing areas are treated with water to repel the ink. By far the most common type of commercial print. Laser printing: A high quality imaging system using a laser beam to produce an image on a photosensitive drum. The image is transferred on to paper by a conventional xerographic (photocopier) process. |
Digital
printing: These systems work directly from electronic data and
avoid the intermediate stage of films. Because these systems use an
inherently 4-colour process there is no cost saving to be made from
using one or two-colour designs. Printers of newsletters, reports, leaflets, brochures, cards and posters. All formats especially Microsoft Publisher, PowerPoint and Word.
|
Offset printing: A lithographic process where the paper does not come into contact with the printing plate. The ink is transferred from the plate to a rubber cylinder and then to the paper. Large format: Prints that require larger than standard paper sizes – such as window or exhibition displays. |
